Airline Pilot


Becoming an Airline Pilot will require to gather a serious amount of experience in the form of flight hours, knowledge (validated by passing federal exam) and some time to gather both of them.

Experience may be acquired through various means:
First of them is at the flight school, then in air work or instruction or as a co-pilot.
The theory takes a lot of work and commitment from the candidates, and we can help you pass through by ground course, support and assessment prep exams.


  • Two written exams : the SAMRA (MTO, Navigation aids, Flight planning)and the
    SARON (Navigation, Air laws, Exploitation), with a passing mark of 70%.
  • 1500 hours total flight time with 250 hours as pilot in command, including 100 hours in night flight
    and 100 hours in navigation.
  • A valid IFR rating on multi-engine including 75 hours in IFR.

The requirements here above do not take into consideration the experience as a pilot in command under supervision, hours on glider or ultra-light aircraft. Some dispositions are provided in the regulation about these points. Every case is analyzed in order to determine the proper minimum requirements.

Options to get there

After completing the professional licence, the multi-engine and IFR ratings, here are three options in order to gain the required experience:

  • Become a flight instructor, which gives the opportunity to "build-up" your flight hours, experience and knowledge while working on single-engine and multi-engine airplanes.
  • Pass the IATRA exam with 250 hours flight-time as a pilot in command and apply as a co-pilot (although difficult to achieve with only 350 hours)
  • Do aerial work such as air photography, towing advertising banners, fire patrol, paradrops or others.

The most commonly used track is generaly to become a flight instructor since it gives more experience, self-confidence and opportunity to work with different kind of students featuring various sensibilities and experiences. A flight instructor, as part of his duties, must not fear to let someone else fly the airplane. He has the ability to analize, quickly understand and explain things which makes him attractive for some companies.
